AUTUMN QUARTER
CHEMISTRY 162 GENERAL CHEMISTRY III
This class was the last class in the general chemistry series. The knowledge I gained from this series has helped me in other science classes I have taken at the University of Washington, and will continue to help me in the future. This series is also a requirement for many graduate school programs, so having completed it opens many opportunities to me.
ENGLISH 225 SHAKESPEARE
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: WRITING
I took this class to satisfy one of my general education writing classes and because I have always enjoyed shakespeare. In this class we read Macbeth, A Midsummer's Night Dream, The Temptest, and A Winter's Tale. This class helped me better develop my skills as a writer and helped me learn how to read a different type of text in depth.
OCEAN 250 MARINE BIOLOGY
MARINE BIOLOGY MINOR REQUIREMENT
This was the class that solidified for me that I wanted to minor in marine biology. After learning more about how the marine systems function, and the life that lives in the oceans, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. Then I got to go on an overnight fieldtrip to Friday Harbor Labs, and immediately knew that I wanted to study marine biology and complete a full quarter at Friday Harbor Labs.
WINTER QUARTER
CEP 200 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT AND PLANNING
This course is the course that convinced me to major in CEP. I loved how everything took an interdisciplinary prospective and looked at different problems from multiple points of view. Engaging with different people in the class in small groups, and seeing how classes in the CEP major might look, convinced me to apply for CEP.
ENGLISH 131 COMPOSITION EXPOSITION
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: COMPOSITION
I took this class becuase I thought I needed to in order to satisfy my general education requirement. I actually had already satisfied this requiement with English 199 though. While this class did not teach me very much about English, becuase the teacher I had was not very good, it did help teach me to be patient and how to talk to people in authoritative positions about the fact that they are wrong. On multiple occasions the teacher tried to teach us APA formatting, and was simply incorrect in what she was teaching us, so I had to respectfully talk to her and explain why I thought she was wrong, and the research I had done which proved she was not teaching it to us correctly.
ESRM 321 SUSTAINABLE FINANCE
ESRM 321 was a great class, and helped me make the decision to major in CEP. I loved this class and learned a lot of valuable information from it, but decided that I did not like the learning community in the ESRM major. I decided after taking this class that I would prefer to major in CEP and take methods credits from ESRM and ENVIR, instead of choosing to major in one of those departments. This class taught me a lot about sustainability in the business world, and how to evaluate how sustainable a business really is.
OCEAN 121 DEEP SEA VENTS
This was one of the coolest classes I have ever taken at the University of Washington. I learned about underwater hydrothermal vent systems, the geology that makes them, and what kinds of organisms depend on them. It was extremely interesting to learn about something so different from the things we see on the Earth's surface. I took this class with the plan to take the 400 level underwater volcanoes class the next year, and followed through with that plan. This class will serve as a foundation for when I take the 400 level class, that builds upon the topics discussed in this class.
SPRING QUARTER
ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE 211 CLIMATE AND CLIMATE CHANGE
I took this class becuase I believe that climate change is one of the biggest issues my generation is going to have to deal with, and because the effects it has are so wide reaching. Almost every class I have taken that had anything to do with the environment has had a portion of the class dedicated to climate change, so I took this class to develop a more in depth understanding of how climate works.
BIOLOGY 180 INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY I
MARINE BIOLOGY MINOR REQUIREMENT
This class is a requirement for my marine biology minor. It is the first in the three part introductory biology series, and the only one in the series needed for the marine biology minor. Becuase many graduate schools, research oportuinities, and jobs are looking for the complete series, I decided to finish the biology series. This class taught me about how to set up an experiment, and the theory of evolution as well as the basics of several biological principles. The skills I learned in this class have been and will continue ot be useful for doing experiments in the future.
URBDP 300 INTRODUCTION TO URBAN PLANNING
Urban design and planning 300 gave me a lot of information on how urban planning works, and the history of urban planning. I learned about the different movements within urban planning that have shaped our urban landscapes today, and some the benefits and issues that stemmed from these movements. This class provided me with a framework for urban planning, and I will use what I learned in this class when I am trying to work with the natural and built environments at the same time.
